The Good: Great mix of rhythm and RTS game play, cute graphical style, lots to do, $20 isn’t a bad price
The Bad: The game can be so hard you may end up quitting early, no multi player of any kind, somewhat gets redundant
I was really excited for Patapon and then after a while was kind of let down. You play the ancient Patapons who rely on the Almighty for his beating drum to guide them through war. Throughout the game, you can pick up different beats and you have certain combos which do certain attacks, defenses etc. Patapon is a mix between rhythm and RTS…the weirdest combo ever, but it works. The graphics style is cute and attractive…but some of the game isn’t.
The boss fights are very hard and sometimes feel impossible to beat. You can build your whole army (which feels kind of small) and have the boss and you’ll still get your @$$ handed to you. You can pick up weapons and armor during your hunts, raids to make your Patapons stronger but sometimes it doesn’t feel like it makes a difference.
You level up your Patapons by hunting, or fighting more…and this is why I feel the game is very unbalanced. I also feel the game requires too much precision while beating the drum, especially in Fever mode, where you Patapons have the super charged strength and attacks but requires so much precision you can’t even get into Fever mode half the time. Bottom line is, whether you like this game or not you’re going to be in for one hell of a challenge and for $20…how can you complain?
