The Good: Looks and sounds good, lots of variety, powerful weapons, fast pace
The Bad: Unforgiving, bad controls
Zombie Shock is an intense and beautifully made side scroller shooter with lots of blood, gore, and zombies. You play as a mad scientist and are running from zombies, but it’s all about the guns that make this game fun. When you do complete a level you can use your points to buy new guns and upgrade your stats, and the guns feel powerful and very useful. During levels, you can run across cash, blow up barrels, or anything you can find to kill these things. The game is very fast paced, and the heavy metal music in the background helps with this.
The game does have one problem and that’s the controls. You use the left stick to move around and the right to aim, but you must tap the screen to shoot. This game would play better with a dual stick shooter setup in mind. Once you die you can either start the stage over with a 0 score, or start the whole level over again with your current score. Some levels can be over 10 stages long and you just wind up not caring about your score anymore.
The boss fights are fun, and there’s a large variety of zombie types. The game looks really good with beautifully drawn 2D sprites and backgrounds, and there is a good variety of levels to look at. With the game being kind of unforgiving, it’s right up there with people who love games like Contra, Castlevania, or even R Type, but it’s forgiving enough for beginners too.
