The Good: Gun models look good, variety in gameplay, shooting is fun
The Bad: Ugly graphics, terrible controls, does not capture the console version at all, stupid story, multiplayer gets boring fast
Portable ports of console games are nothing new but good ports are not very common. Bad Company 2 for the iPhone is another example of a rushed port to sell more copies. Instead of building from the ground up to make it work they take the idea of the game and squeeze it down into portable form, but they fail to capture the cinematic beauty and full effect of the console version.
While the story is pretty forgettable so is the shooting. The controls are a pain to use since the game uses an old dated control scheme for the iPhone that other shooters have moved away from. I’m talking about the analog nub/use the right side of the screen combo that I hate. Instead of using two virtual sticks like NOVA and other excellent iPhone shooters have used EA opted for this frustrating scheme. What doesn’t help is that the game also uses an auto center so getting a shot lined up makes you want to throw your device across the room. Weapons have no punch like the console version and the environments are cramped hallways with shooting gallery AI enemies. Sure the game switches game play up with tank and turret sections but these are just as frustrating as the rest of the game.
The game also looks pretty ugly minus the nice looking weapon models. Low-resolution textures and crappy animations don’t help the game either. In fact, the only thing that helps the game is the auto aim which I had to turn on because the controls were just so terrible. The multiplayer side of the game is fun for about an hour then you get bored thanks to one mode (team deathmatch) and the control issues really start to show through here. With no perks or weapon upgrades is just a faster-paced version of the campaign. I would only recommend Bad Company 2 to those who need a quick FPS fix until the next great one comes out. If you want a Battlefield experience in your hand this isn’t it.
