The Good: Solid controls, fast paced, multiplayer is decent, looks decent
The Bad: Feels stiff, very linear, stupid story, very short, not many weapons to use
Military Shooters are something that has struggled on the App Store for a long time due to the technical limitations of the hardware. Modern Combat actually makes the sub-genre fun with solid controls and fast paced action. While the story is the usual ridiculous military shooter schpeel you will learn to ignore it and just start shooting bad guys. If you must know you play as Chief and you are with a squad of other guys stopping a terrorist named Abu Bahaa from detonating a nuke. Sound familiar? Probably 100 times it does.
The shooting is great due to the controls which have good icon placements and it feels responsive. The only thing I didn’t like was the auto re-centering which drove me nuts and there’s no way to turn it off. You can chuck grenades, pick up weapons (there are only a few), and there are even some turret riding sections. The weapons feel different and even the shotgun will knock enemies off their feet at close range. The level design is a bit annoying because of the linearity and constant backtracking plus every level looks the same. There are only 10 missions which you can beat in about 2 hours, but the multiplayer might keep you coming back here and there.
Visually the game got an iPhone 4 upgrade so it looks decent, but the game overall feels very stiff and rushed (as are most Gameloft games). There are points in the game that are ridiculously hard so there are some balancing issues (I have always doubted Gameloft testing their games). You also have to finish the level in one sitting or you have to restart from the beginning if you quit the game. So, make sure you have at least 20 minutes of time to complete each level. Overall for military shooters go this one is solid enough for a few hours of fun.
